Bakka-Phoenix is Canada’s oldest science fiction and fantasy bookstore since 1972. The name Bakka, was taken from Frank Herbert’s Dune, and means β€˜the weeper who mourns for all mankind’.

They have nearly every sci-fi and fantasy series you could possibly imagine, including a beautiful collector’s edition of J.R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings as well as the complete Dune collection. I was happy to spot a shelf filled with Canada’s Emily St. John Mandel, author of Station Eleven, The Glass Hotel, and Sea of Tranquility.

Located on Harbord Street, Bakka-Phoenix hosts author appearances, readings, panels, and is THE place to shop for all fantasy & sci-fi lovers.

Fun Fact: Jagmeet Singh, human rights activist and the Leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, was also book shopping while I was in there :)
