Type Books across from Trinity Bellwoods Park is one of the city’s most beloved literary staples—and for good reason.

“Serving readers since 2006,” Type is an independent bookstore for serious book lovers. Their employees are extremely tapped into the bookish zeitgeist so rest assured their staff picks will never steer you wrong.

Every time I walk into Type, their selection is always supreme. No matter what I pick up, especially the titles on the front two tables, I know they’ve been carefully curated and I’m guaranteed to find something intriguing. The best part of Type for me is that the browsing process never feels overwhelming, as it can with larger chains.

Further into the bookshop, there's a magazine and newspaper wall which stocks everything from the Paris Review to the Sunday New York Times. The “red room” (as I call it) with the chandelier is devoted to cookbooks, travel, non-fiction, and at the back there’s a colourful children's books section.

They have some unique bookish gifts near the cash and host a litany of author readings and book launches, so be sure to keep up-to-date with their events page.

Given that I’m physically incapable of leaving a bookshop empty-handed, I picked up the following:

  • On Women by Susan Sontag

  • A Leopard-Skin Hat by Anne Serre

  • Motherhood by Sheila Heti (I’m in the mood for a re-read and wanted my own copy)

  • 150 Bookstores You Need to Visit Before You Die (I mean, hello! I had to!)
